Summary: Amazing headphones 2008-06-18
Comment: Other people have already articulated why these are great headphones and I have no new reasons to add. That said, I want to point out that I spent a great deal of time researching headphones before buying these. They truly live up to all expectations as an incredible sounding sealed, comfortable pair of headphones.

Though I prefer semi-open, the place I use them most is the office. Unfortunately that combined with enjoying a lot of hip hop (including gangster rap) means sealed was the only realistic way to go for me. These are one of the best!

Summary: I wish Grado made sealed headphones 2008-06-10
Comment: Comfortable to wear for long periods, the sound cut off switch works great in an office environment, blocks me from hearing others and prevents them from hearing me. They are studio monitors so the reproduction is very very accurate, almost too accurate at times, I wish they sounded a little bit more like my Grado SR-80's, but I needed sealed headphones.

Summary: Prefer the 271's over the 171s 2008-03-15
Comment: I had originally purchased the AKG K171s but after trying them for a couple of hours I ended up sending them back to Amazon as they were not comfortable on my ears. I am glad I did make the switch, even thou the 271s are a good bit bigger then the 171s they don't weight that much more. The sound quality is just as good if not better and with the bigger ear cups they are a lot more comfortable on my big head.

The 271s do take a bit more power get good volume out of them then my Sennheiser HD215s. So when I first hooked them up to the computer to test I thought they were not working. Then I remembered that even with the 171s I had to increase the system volume about 10-15% to get normal sound levels out of them. But, it is not like you need a headphone amp for them the iPod drives them just fine. The only thing I don't like about them that they come with a 3m straight cord. Now this would be fine if I was planing to hook them up to a home stereo system, but for portable use that much cord flapping is not a good thing. It's ok thou the 271s cord is completely replaceable. The other feature of the 271's is that they turn off when not in use. The 271s are marketed to recording studios where you would not want unintended sound to leak back into the equipment but for what I intend to use them for it's not really necessary.

Summary: Disappointing for the money 2008-02-13
Comment: After reading other reviews of these AKG K271 Studio headphones, it sounded like it was time to pounce on a new set of headphones for my home studio, so I got them. I always imagined that the sound quality of my Denon AH-D950s (discontinued) were spoiling me, and the AKGs have merely verified that suspicion.

I was able to do very direct comparisons to the Denons using my studio headphone amp (Behringer HA400) and quite honestly the AKGs just didn't stand up. They are missing a good deal of the punchiness of the Denons, and I couldn't seem to find EQ settings that even came close.

I began to wonder if maybe this was a case where the Denons response was merely colored in a way that I like, and that the AKGs flatness might serve me well when it came to mixdown of my own tracks. So I did a somewhat less direct comparison and compared them to my near-field studio monitors (Alesis M1 Active). Again, they didn't stand up. The monitors are designed to have an extremely flat response and the AKGs were hollow even compared to that.

Quite simply, I am very disappointed with these cans. For the money, I shall explore a newer Denon or Sennheiser model next time.

BTW other aspects of the headphones, comfort, etc, were neutral to good. I was primarily interested in premium sound quality at an affordable price.
