Summary: satisfied 2008-12-10
Comment: after a month of comparing the H500 to the H700, i decided to go for the h500. i read in a couple of places that after the proper "burn in" of the h500 headphones, they sounded just as good as the h700.
since i dont have both pairs i cant say for sure. but what i can say is that i am very happy with the sound that these headphones produce. with audio equipment its very hard to be satisfied with your purchase since there is always a better sounding product available for more cash. Honestly it seems like the more you pay, the less pay off you have. None the less im sure the and h700 may in fact sound better despite their same range of sound.
what i have learned is alot of the time when you pay extra for a sound product, you have greater expectations of the sound.
coming from a high end pair of denon ear buds, i can say that the sound from these headphones beats any ear bud or closed head phone i have ever heard.
it may not be the top of the best of the best, but for 1/3 less then the h700 you get a great mid/hi with decent base.

Summary: Highly Recommended 2007-12-06
Comment: I was expecting a quality product when I ordered these headphones, but I was still surprised and thrilled when I put them on and listened to some of my favorite music. I am now hearing sounds and instruments that before were not as distinguishable. Also, using these headphones while watching movies gives the same surround feeling as in a theater. I'm very impressed and can't believe I got such a good piece of audio equipment for such a reasonable price!

Summary: A high end look with way too much high end. 2007-09-03
Comment: From a distance these things have the look of well crafted head phones.
Up close it's easy to see that they are cheaply made.
Bottom line: Way too much high end. Its distracting and sometimes painfull. I've heard sounds more true to reference from headphones that are a third the price. Save up a little more cash, do some research, and get the real deal.

Summary: Audio Technica ATH-AD500s - a superior value! 2007-06-07
Comment: I was unable to find any useful information anywhere online to help me decide if the Audio Technica ATH-AD500s were anywhere near as good as the highly acclaimed and considerably more expensive ATH-AD700s. The specs (except for impedance) are comparable and these are discounted to within a few dollars of the cheaper ATH-AD300s. So I decided to take a chance. They are extremely comfortable, appear and feel durable, and sound great even with my low-power desktop stereo system. They are very large, open, over-the ear, with velour-covered cups, and they deliver a big, clear, spacious sound without overbearing bass. Plenty loud, I suspect they'd work with a portable, but because of their size you won't want to wear them on any outings.
I'm still breaking them in, but so far I'm extremely pleased!
May your decision be easier than mine was!
