Summary: Great headphones for large heads! Gorgeous sound quality! Super comfy! 2008-09-18
Comment: I had to wait 3 weeks for Amazon to get these in stock -- and it was worth the wait!
These have got to be the most comfortable headphones I've ever worn! I have a pretty big size 7 3/4 noggin and these fit like a glove! The unique split wing supports are far lighter and more comfortable than the traditional one-piece headband. The sound quality is superb. I would call them a closed-back version the AKG K240 (which are my all-time favorite, but they were semi-open). The giant 53mm cans are slightly angled which must help them deliver rich delicious sound! Probably the best Audio Technica set I've ever listened to. The super long cloth-wrapped cord is a nice touch too. I only wish it had a carrying case.

Summary: Very Good Sound 2008-08-27
Comment: The ATH-A700s are a pair of headphones with an excellent "soundstage," meaning they make you sound like you're inside the music or movie, not just having the sound pumped into your ears.

These headphones replace my Bose Triports (now Bose Around Ear headphones). Compared to them, these headphones don't have as much bass, but certainly have more accurate reproduction of all tones. The only negative compared to the Bose is the size/fit. The ATH-A700's are very large, with the ear cups being the size of CDs, and they don't form an "air-tight" seal around your head like the Bose. This means they don't filter out as much outside noise, but it is still a very comfortable fit.

Summary: Great Headphones 2008-08-21
Comment: These are the best (and most efficient) headphones I've ever owned. I've had good headphones before (including a pair that cost more than these) but I'm hearing details with these that I never noticed before. I find them very comfortable as well.

Highly recommended.

Summary: Two words: WOW 2008-08-02
Comment: I really enjoy these headphones. They are amazingly comfortable to wear, have adequate ambient noise rejection and have had no problems with them at all.

These phones are of extremely high quality, and are great for studio use.

Having said that, these things are HUGE. The ear cups are about the size of my palm, which is why the are so comfortable, but you aren't wearing these thing to the gym or packing them on a flight.

One warning: If you get these and they don't seem to sound quite right, try out a better sound card / mp3 player / whatever. These things will let you hear every flaw in the audio.

Also, you may want a headphone amp to help keep things crisp if you like things fairly loud.

All in all, excellent phones!

Summary: iPod incompatibility? 2008-07-23
Comment: The sound on these headphones is not as good (in my opinion) as what I get from my open Sennheiser HD X100s - they have a thinner, airier feel (less resonance, less bass) that I didn't particularly care for, though I concede that there was better distinction between instruments and more definition of vocal texture. The main problem for me, and the reason that I returned them, is that they kept crashing my iPod. I bought them to have closed cans for library use (I spend 7-8 hours a day in a library reading room doing research for my dissertation) and while they allowed me to have high volume without disturbing others, they crashed the iPod every 20 minutes or so. The iPod would decide it was out of battery power (no matter how full it was), red bar, and go dead. It was easy enough to power it back up (and by then it knew it had a full battery) but still enough of an inconvenience to return them. I suppose the headphones need more power than the Sennheisers.

Also, be aware that the cans are the size of CDs, and the headband protrudes several inches above the head (it's held on by some truly clever little wing things). The earphone pad extended from an inch above my ear almost to my jawbone. You will look like an alien helicopter pilot with earphone envy wearing these on a bad day, and a steampunk Princess Leia android on a good day. Really. That also made them a fairly poor choice for wearing in public (even just the library).
