I always carry a two pairs of headphones with me, one pair for serious listening, and another pair for casual, on-the-go listening. The serious listening role is currently filled by a pair of Monster Turbines. The other role was filled by a pair of Sennheiser CX500's, but sadly they broke. As such, I was on the hunt for a pair of budget headphones, preferably in the $20 range (the $40 Senns were a little too much for this purpose). Fortunately, I came upon these shortly after. I knew Denon was a good brand, but I didn't know they made budget headphones. Anyway, I immediately bought them to replace the Sennheisers. So far, I've had the Denon's for about two weeks.
Sound quality-wise, these are top-notch. Almost as crisp and clear as the Senns (but $20 cheaper!). The bass has more "thump" than the Senns, and is almost as thumpy, although not as deep as the Monsters. The mids are a bit laid-back, so some voices and guitar notes don't sound as full as they should, but they are...Read more

I really didn't realize the difference in the audio quality was going to be this huge. Let me tell you that the sound differential is so noticeable. I am listening to Ludovico Einaudi's beautiful piano piece: snow prelude no.2 and I didnt realize that there were some very soft drum percussions in the background until I used these headphones. I thought I was listening to a different album! The rubber ring fitted snuggly in my ears and it meant it did reduce the external background noise so I didn't to have the volume as loud. There are other sized rubber rings to fit your earhole. The Audi was definitely a lot sharper and clearer. I also played joss stone and the voice was crisper. For this price, this is well worth the switch from the standard apple products. Dennon is a recognized brand - great buy.

When reviewing a product like this, I think it's important to know the reviewers age - I'm in my 50s - I'm not listening to Kenye West and Jay-Z through these. I'm most likely listening to classical music, Sinatra, or folk-rock in the Dylan/Taylor range. And some pop.
Nor am I blasting them. Years playing keyboard in a band has already taken a minor toll. I keep the volume reasonable.
That said, these are good little earbuds. The midrange is clear and balanced, the bass is definitely there, and they fit as well as a set of earbuds will fit for 20-30 bucks. Their sound blocking is not as good as the pair of Shures that I owned, but then again, they are about 25% of the price.
Overall, these entry level Denons provide good sound quality for listening to your iPod as you travel, run, or just at home. You'd have to spend a lot more to get a signifiant upgrade in sound quality. As I said, proper fit at this price range is a hit and miss affair, but these...Read more
