Summary: Not Too Shabby 2008-09-16
Comment: I purchased these red headphones at Fry's for $20. Obviously, I should have ordered them from Amazon instead, but oh well. (Although, they look much better in person than in that photo above.) You may also have seen that this pair comes in white, black, pink, green, etc. I picked red so that I could find them more easily in the darkness of my purse (and I thought it was more attractive looking than any of the other colors).
Headphone selection at Fry's ranged from $4.00 - $400.00. I knew that a really cheap pair would probably have really bad sound, but a really expensive pair was nothing I needed for my very occasional use of my mp3 player. Frankly, my *phone* is an mp3 player, and I still didn't use its feature much. I never had headphones I liked enough to carry around with me, so I rarely listened to my phone or Microtek mp3 player.
(That's right, I don't own an iPod [shock]. Why? Because my Microtek may not look as nice, but it has more features like a memory card slot and microphone in/record function. And, the price was A LOT cheaper.)
These headphones come with three earbud sizes. The medium is default and fit me fine. Actually, these buds are even more comfortable than my Jawbone II. They fit snug and I've even been able to rest a side of my head down "jammin' to some grooves." At first, the buds seemed cheap and flimsy and I thought I was duped, but when I put them in, all was well.
The way they fit snugly in your ear cancels out *a lot* of noise. Their (nicely designed) box even said "noise-canceling" so I'm not sure why Amazon's listing doesn't say anything about that. It's not completely silent around you, but damn, I was impressed. I even told my husband I should use these as earplugs to bed (I'm a very light sleeper so even the cat drinking water can awaken me).
As for sound? It's fine. It's not AWESOME! but it's fine. Especially for $20/$13 headphones. I like more bass in my music because treble alone sounds shallow. Or hollow? Or cheap? I fiddled with the equalizer settings on my mp3 player, and that helped, but the 'phones are obviously not going to sound like my headset at home.
I wish this pair came with retractable cords because I've always found it annoying to recoil them onto my mp3 player or around my fingers, etc. But, I hate most retractable devices - those big, ugly discs? Bleh.
SUMMARY: If you're an audiophile, then I wouldn't recommend these. I don't use them at home because I have a better headset (and speakers) for my computer. But if you're just looking for a good deal on portable *noise-canceling* headphones, the price, quality, and comfort of these are enough to recommend them - in whatever color you choose.
