Summary: solid erabuds 2008-09-20
Comment: I was tired of having crappy sound quality from my earbuds, so I got these, and I'm pretty happy. They cut of most outside noise, which I'm personally not a huge fan of, but plenty of people prefer that, so i won't count that against these buds. Otherwise they fit well. The short cable is nice for my ipod shuffle, and the longer cable is a bit heavy, but the clip takes care of that issue.

Summary: we may have a winner 2008-09-12
Comment: I got an ipod nano for running. After going through several different headphones, dealing w/ ear pieces that wouldn't stay in, and fighting w the cord, and forever searching for those plastic ear inserts that keep getting lost, I decided to get yet another one. I read all the reviews, for every positive, there's a negative. I finally just based my purchase on specs. I like the fact that this one has a short cord and an extension, a clip that keep the cord pin down. Took them for a run today, wow. I didn't have to adjust anything (or pop the earpiece back) for the entire run. short cord + clip = no flapping. The sound is great. I think I finally found a winner.

Summary: far better than ipod oem 2008-07-29
Comment: i just got my pair today. i'm not a super audiophile like others. but i can tell you these blow the ipod buds away.
it's like a whole new ipod. volume is way down. the bass and highs are all incredible now. 1/3 now is like almost full volume before.
if you're really an audiophile you likely have your ipod filled with few songs since you have the quality at cd level, not mp3. you also likely have $300+ phones in, not earbuds. i like having 1400 songs on my nano and understand that it's not the highest quality.
but compared to the loose ipod buds, songs are a millions times better. i'm super happy b/c i found these for $30 shipped somewhere. if i had not found them dirt cheap, knowing now how great they are, i would pay the $90.
it's true what others say that hitting the wire is noticeable. but unless you pay tons of $$ you just expect that with in-ear buds. simply securing it by using the clip or other ways seems to prevent it though. you only hear feedback from the top of the cord.
the short cord seems the perfect length for my arm band in the gym at 6' tall. now the extension is very long. not sure why anyone would need it this long, but you don't need to worry about it being short.
the medium seems to fit me well. very comfy. it was a pain while snowboarding and lifting in the gym and my white ipod buds would fall out. these seem nice and snug. the large are very snug. so maybe i'll shred with the large.
now if i feel it would be necessary to hear others or whatever sounds while enjoying my music... well i would likely not use my ipod... but i still have my white buds which allow me to hear plenty.

Great bass and crisp highs..... these bad boys can go loud and not distort, I at work use them by just putting them on top of my desk and listening that way.... thats how good they are. They look great and are built tough. Try them!!!!!

Summary: Mediocre, Tinny Shrill Boomy Muddy. 2008-04-11
Comment: Compared to other isolating earphones in roughly the same price range, I think these are a little better than mediocre, like C+, 6/10.
One correctable problem is the soft sleeves which come with them; the earphones have a clear emphasis on the low frequencies, which is considered a feature, but the soft, compliant sleeves which provide the isolation will resonate at low frequencies, causing the already emphasized bass to have muddy boomy peaks. I have Shure E2c which came with less compliant clear sleeves (part EA810) which fit the CX400s, and using those smoothed out the bass a lot (but it is still emphasized, not neutral).
The other problem is the high end frequencies also seem too loud... it might not be a problem except that when combined with the heavy audio compression and high frequency equalization emphasis used so often nowadays, and the munching of the audio during lossy data compression, the result is essentially a veil of tinny shrill hissing noise in front of the original audio signal high frequencies. I do not have a solution for this; I have not tried earwax filters... I have Etymotic ER-4S, for which filters are considered a necessary feature, and they sound abysmal without them.
It seems like right now it might be better to get Shure SCL2 for roughly the same price.
